Providence, RI — The Providence Public School District (PPSD) broke ground on the new Assa Messer/West Broadway PK-8 School Monday afternoon. The $62.5 million project will unite the two schools into one modern, purpose-built facility. 

The new four-story building will replace the aging elementary school. It will feature dedicated Pre-K spaces, separate learning and bathroom spaces for younger and older students, and upgraded technology and safety systems. 

PROVIDENCE, RI - A Providence Public School District (PPSD) school, Classical High School, has achieved a five-star rating in the Rhode Island Department of Education’s (RIDE) recently released 2025 school and district accountability results. Improving in achievement, growth, and English Language Proficiency (ELP), Classical is one of only 19 schools statewide that earned a 5-star rating, and only one of two high schools that received 5-stars.

The Providence Public School District (PPSD) will host its annual School Choice Fair on Thursday, November 13. The event allows families of rising kindergartners, middle school and high school students to explore the school options available for the 2026-2027 school year.

PROVIDENCE, RI – Earlier today, the Rhode Island Department of Education released the results of the 2025 state assessments including the Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System (RICAS), showing Providence public school students have rebounded above pre-pandemic levels in both English Language Arts (ELA) and math. Results show a modest climb for students in the capital city with a 2.4% increase in English Language Arts (ELA) and a 1.7% increase in math.

The overall results for the Providence Public School District (PPSD) show it is continuing with positive gains in both ELA and Math. The percentage of Providence students meeting or exceeding expectations in RICAS math outpaced the statewide growth of 1.3 percentage points in the same measure and fell just shy of the state's 2.9% ELA increase. In addition, the District has become a leader in the state in the reduction of chronic absenteeism rates. PPSD’s chronic absenteeism rate saw a 6.9 percentage-point decrease between the 2023-24 and the 2024-25 school years, one of the steepest declines in the state.
