PPSD Substitute-To-Teacher Residency Program

PPSD is seeking passionate substitute teachers who are committed to becoming certified educators to help all students thrive and meet their goals!
Designed for substitutes who are passionate about getting certified to teach in one of the following high-need areas:
- Special Education- Severe Intellectual Disabilities (All grades)
- Special Education- Mild/Moderate (Elementary or Secondary)
- Special Education- Early Childhood
- Secondary Math
- Secondary Science
The Providence Public Schools Substitute-to-Teacher Residency Program is a 10-month, paid clinical teaching experience running from August 2026 through June 2027. Sub residents are embedded in one school community throughout the year, working alongside teachers, administrators, and staff to deliver high-quality instruction and ensure consistent learning for students. The program is designed not only to provide valuable classroom experience, but also to support residents in enrolling in certification programs and continuing on the pathway to becoming fully certified teachers.
What You'll Be Doing
Fall 2026: Apply and enroll in your certification program of choice (Certification-only program or Master's program)
First Day of School to November: 2 days of Shadowing Expert Teachers & 3 days of Substitute Coverage Duties
November to February: 1 day of Shadowing Expert Teachers & 4 days of Substitute Coverage Duties
February to June: Full-time Substitute Coverage Duties
March to April: Receive support and guidance as you apply for full-time teaching positions for SY 27-28
Eligibility Requirements
- Hold a completed Bachelor's Degree
- Experience teaching and/or working with students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse learning needs
- Commitment to becoming a certified teacher in one of the following high-need areas: special education (SID or mild/moderate), secondary math, or secondary science
- Commit to enrolling and completing necessary coursework to achieve teacher certification
- Be available to work full-time in a school for the entire 2026–2027 school year as a per-diem substitute and commit to applying and securing a position as a teacher of record for 2 years following in PPSD.
- Be passionate about working with diverse learners, including multilingual learners and those with varying academic, social-emotional, and disability-related needs.
